I'm not going to lie, I watched some highlights from the Oscars last night and got a little disheartened at all the negative comments I saw around the web that spoke about how certain things are not as important as other things, so I thought I'd take a stab and explaining this concept to the internet.
Social activism, and equality are just as important as any other cause. A lifetime of being treated unfairly because of the roles we were born into, has the potential of creating an endless strain of lost opportunities and hardships that shouldn't be thrust upon anyone. Hard work DOES NOT equate to EQUAL opportunity. People are poor, hungry, and dying. Those issues matter just as much as social change because we can't be considered a great nation when equality doesn't exist. Even our poor, hungry and dying are put in different classes based on a simple difference as the color of their skin. Just because you don't see an issue as relevant does not make it any less real. Change starts by acknowledging the faults in ourselves. Love and change in oneself leaves room to better the world around us. It's not hard. It just takes awareness and kindness. Kindness is key. Equality is the goal, so lets start working towards it, because all it takes is small acts to one another that create a bigger, and more positive picture
RuPaul has been saying it for long time, "If you can't love yourself, how the hell are you gonna love somebody else? Can I get an Amen".
